Government IT Security Report Released
Government needs to make IT security a priority, says Auditor General
Following up on a report the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) issued to government managers in 2012 on the poor state of IT security existing at that time, Mr. Swarbrick recently issued a follow-up report to the Legislative Assembly summarizing his ongoing concerns.
“Progress has been too slow in addressing the concerns I previously raised,” said Mr. Swarbrick, “the opportunity for significant damage to government operations and its reputation should mean that significantly more action is needed. Government needs to make IT security a priority.”
The report entitled, “Government IT Security,” summarizes the work done by the OAG in this critical area and reports that Government is not doing enough to protect its systems and information from the significant risks and threats from an attack. With government wanting to move to E-Government, more of its business being conducted using information technology and an ever-changing global environment, it is increasingly important for the Government to ensure it protects these important assets.
“Government has not been doing enough to ensure it is protecting these important resources”, said the Auditor General. “While I have been assured action will be taken, the Computer Services Department will need to inform the Legislative Assembly about its progress to correct this serious situation.”
